Day 10 didn’t happen. Yesterday I didn’t organize at all. I let a lack of sleep and a tight schedule get in the way. So today I spent some extra time on this project. I ended up spending 45 minutes today:
- Reading and discarding old articles I’d kept for years (3 in-depth articles, 19 pieces of paper). While this may not sound like sorting, to me it counts because much of what has been piling up in my file cabinet consists of reading material I deemed important to save years ago. In order to make an informed decision about what to do with it now, I want to read it. I’m sure some would say if you haven’t touched it in years, it should go directly into the recycle without review but I don’t feel the need to be that strict. The articles drew me in and so I re-read them.
I learned a lot… Many of the articles had to do with things I was struggling with or learning when I saved them so re-reading them now (6-10 years later) was like looking through a time-capsule. It reminded me of all I’ve learned and how I’ve grown. It also reminded me that what seems important (and worth holding onto) now, will shift and change over the years. I expect this insight to make it easier to resist the urge to keep new articles.
