Today I focused on removing everything I’d chosen to get rid of and delivering items to their new homes. I know some experts say you should remove what you decide to purge immediately but since I want to make sure I’m finding the best place for my donations (rather than putting things that could be reused into the trash), I find that standard untenable. I’m going to aim for once a week during this challenge but will see how it goes…
Today I disposed of the following items in ways I felt good about, though there are likely better options I’ve yet to find:
- Clothing in good shape went to a local shelter that gives its clients private shopping appointments to choose clothing from their free ‘store’
- Housewares went to Goodwill – I’ve bought this sort of item from Goodwill many times over the years and as far as I can tell others do too so I’m hopeful it will stay out of the landfill
- Worn out socks went into the recycle (I just discovered that SF will take fabric that can’t be reused in its current form in the recycle bin as long as it’s in a clear bag)
- Cable box and remote went back to the cable provider (I recently canceled cable service as I don’t use it)
- An old cell phone, a couple worn cords and other electronic bits and pieces went to the local ewaste collection point
I’m grateful for the fresh start having gotten all that stuff out of the house. And I have renewed energy for the next round of sorting, starting tomorrow.
