Day 4 declutter challenge

pexels-photo-960706.jpegToday was not glamorous but I feel that much better having completed my declutter tasks for the day considering how much I was dreading them.

Today I tackled the dark and foreboding area next to the fridge. It’s where I keep cleaning tools like mops and dust pans. For the last year or more, I’ve been lucky enough to be able to have someone clean my house every other week so I haven’t used those tools in a while. The other day, in search of my re-useable bags for grocery shopping, I realized how completely disgusting that area had become. So today I set a timer for 15 minutes and:

  • Pulled everything out of that corner, including fallen refrigerator magnets, multiple types of mops and 3 dust pan sets
  • Rinsed/ wiped down all dusty, forgotten finds from that corner
  • Identified 2 mops beyond saving and took them down to the trash
  • Identified 5 other items to be donated (duplicate mops, extra dust pans and brushes) and put them with the growing donation piles

What I learned: This was definitely not my favorite day of decluttering but once again I was surprised by how much I could get done in just 15 min. Because I wasn’t loving what I was doing (unlike some days when I get into a state of flow with sorting), I checked the timer several times in 15 min (like I said, I really wasn’t excited about this one!) but when I realized I only had 3 minutes of suffering (j/k) left, I got a fresh wave of motivation to finish in that time.

Since the donation piles are getting a bit out of control, I’m planning to dedicate my decluttering time tomorrow to delivering all donation items to their new homes.
